Adjacent to the temple, the River Krishna flows and is referred to as ‘Pataalganga’ in this vicinity.

Details

The Meenakshi Amman Temple, also known as the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Kovil, is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the vibrant city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This temple is dedicated to Parvati, who is revered as Meenakshi, and her consort Shiva, known here as Sundareswarar. It serves as the heart and soul of the 2,500-year-old city of Madurai and is a significant attraction for the Tamil people. References to this temple can be found in ancient Tamil literature, although the present structure was constructed between 1623 and 1655 CE.

The temple complex boasts 14 towering gateways, with heights ranging from 45 to 50 meters. The southern tower, standing at a towering 51.9 meters (170 feet), is the tallest among them. Additionally, two ornately sculpted vimanas grace the shrines over the garbhagrihas (sanctum sanctorum) of the main deities.

On a daily basis, the temple welcomes around 15,000 visitors, and this number can swell to 25,000 on Fridays. It generates an annual revenue of sixty million Rupees. The temple is adorned with approximately 33,000 sculptures, adding to its architectural splendor. It was even nominated as one of the top 30 contenders for the “New Seven Wonders of the World.”

The Meenakshi Amman Temple stands as the most prominent landmark in the city and is the most visited tourist attraction. Its annual 10-day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival, celebrated during April and May, draws in more than one million visitors, making it a grand spectacle of cultural and religious significance.
